The people, tools, data and communities behind the toolkit.

Updated Page history on GitHub

Paradox Modding Toolkit is created and maintained by Joël Deffner. It is an independent community project, not an official Paradox Interactive product. Game names belong to their respective owners. Screenshots show the toolkit working with game or mod content; that content retains its authors' rights.

The website uses the toolkit's existing PX / TK logo. Its documentation is adapted from the public project wiki, including the published mirrors of the canonical developer guides. See Home for the content revisions and review status.

This toolkit stands on a lot of other people's work. Everything it "knows" is derived from a verifiable source, and much of its design was learned from tools that came before it. Thank you to the projects, data sets and communities below, and to the Paradox modding community generally for documenting engines that ship largely undocumented.

The same list is in the extension: Paradox: Credits, the Credits row in the Project panel's Info group, or the Credits card in the Wiki hub. It lays the projects out as one grid of cards, each wearing its group (tools and data, design and icons, libraries) as an icon, with the name as the link, the license beside it and what the toolkit uses it for under it; an author with a public profile is linked too. Chips above the grid filter by group, and the hub's search reads every card.

Two projects deserve singling out as the giants whose shoulders this stands on: cwtools, which pioneered editor intelligence for Paradox script and mapped out what good tooling here even looks like, and tiger, the validator this wraps rather than competes with. The deep diagnostics are tiger's work, surfaced in the editor.

Upstream sources and acknowledgements#

Source What we use it for License / terms
Crusader Kings III, Victoria 3 and Europa Universalis V game files (Paradox Interactive) The primary ground truth: the bundled schema layers are derived metadata harvested from the games' own _*.info docs, the vanilla gui/ trees, vanilla usage counts, script_docs and data-type dumps, and measured texture dimensions. No game assets are redistributed. Game content © Paradox Interactive; requires your own install
jesec/ck3-modding-wiki The bundled CK3 fallback token lists in packages/server/data/ck3/wikidocs/ (effects / triggers / scopes / data types), a Markdown mirror of the official CK3 wiki CC BY-SA 3.0, see ATTRIBUTION.md
amtep/tiger The validator behind the diagnostics integration, as ck3-tiger and vic3-tiger; auto-downloaded from its releases at the user's request, never bundled GPL-3.0 (separate program, invoked as a process)
kaiser-chris/cwtools-eu5-config The source of the EU5 folder schema: packages/server/src/games/eu5/schema.generated.ts is machine-generated from this project's types = { } declarations (pinned commit 7f2764a). Only the type-to-folder table is used; none of the rule language, and no CWT source file is redistributed. MIT, see THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md
kaiser-chris/cwtools-vic3-config Cross-check only. The Victoria 3 schema was written by hand against a real install, then confirmed against these rules for folder names and definition kinds (for example that Vic3 reads the plural common/on_actions). Nothing is generated from it. MIT, see THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md
kaiser-chris/pdx-flag-builder The model behind the Flag Builder: its coat-of-arms structure (pattern + emblems + subs, with instances), the game's placeholder colors, and the recolor rule of its shader are reimplemented in TypeScript. No source file is copied, no asset is redistributed. MIT, see THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md
cwtools/cwtools-vscode, cwtools, cwtools-ck3-config Landscape research and design inspiration (settings surface, validation-feature catalog) MIT
shadcn/ui Design reference for the webviews' shared stylesheet: the neutral palette ratios, radii, control heights and focus treatment of its Nova style were read off the generated components and rewritten in plain CSS. No source file is copied; the components themselves are not used. MIT, see THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md
Lucide The icons the webviews draw: Lucide's SVG paths, inlined so the pages stay asset-free ISC, see THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md
microsoft/vscode test/vscodeFuzzy.ts is a faithful port of the suggest widget's scoring (filters.ts fuzzyScore plus completionModel.ts semantics) so tests can measure exactly what users see MIT
Frostbite-time/EventGeneratingForCK3 Feature reference for the event-graph workbench (inline loc editing, chain visualization) not stated
A Game of Thrones (Steam Workshop 2962333032), Princes of Darkness (2216659254) and MEIOU and Taxes for EU5 Corpus evidence: real-world usage frequencies for completion ranking and the EU5 validation corpus. Only aggregate counts ship. Workshop content © their authors
The community Graphical DDS FAQ (thanks to Sparc) The rows of the image-size reference that measuring the vanilla files did not cover (legacy tracks, lifestyle backgrounds, bookmarks, clothing textures, mipmap notes) community documentation
vscode-languageserver-node The LSP client / server runtime (vscode-languageclient, vscode-languageserver, -textdocument, vscode-jsonrpc, vscode-uri) MIT
Node.js An unmodified official win-x64 build ships inside the px-lsp-win-x64-<version>.zip release artifact only, so the standalone server runs with nothing installed first. Not in the .vsix, not in the tarball. Node's own license, shipped beside the binary

Attribution notes#

The bundled CK3 wiki token lists under packages/server/data/ck3/wikidocs/ are a mirror of the official CK3 wiki and are licensed CC BY-SA 3.0. Their attribution is kept in ATTRIBUTION.md in the repository.

The EU5 schema import is MIT, with the full license text and a statement of exactly what was and was not taken in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md, which ships inside the .vsix and both release tarballs.

The toolkit itself is licensed GPL-3.0-or-later: use, modify and redistribute freely, but any distributed fork or derivative must publish its source under the GPL too. Bundled third-party data keeps its own terms.
